The Past Continuous Tense

The Past Continuous tense is used to describe actions or situations that were ongoing or in progress at a specific time in the past. It emphasizes the duration or the interrupted nature of an activity.

When Do We Use the Past Continuous?

  1. Actions in progress at a specific moment in the past: The Past Continuous is used to describe actions that were happening at a particular time in the past.
    • At 8 PM, I was reading a book.
  2. Two or more actions happening at the same time in the past: We can use the Past Continuous to show that two actions were happening at the same time.
    • While she was cooking, I was studying.
  3. Interrupted actions in the past: We use it to describe an action that was interrupted by another action.
    • I was walking when it started to rain.
  4. Temporary actions or situations: It is often used to describe situations that were temporary or not habitual.
    • They were staying at a hotel last week.
